plus, the accusations against the star 49er as the team prepares for the nfc championship. good morning and welcome to mornings on 2 on this saturday, january 19. let's get to r over to rosemarie. good morning, we have a few thinks to talk about. first off, it's blow freeze inning our valley locations this morning. a little bit of fog i'm detecting as well. it's another spare the air day as well. mild temperatures as we head into the afternoon an with the mavericks coming, we have an advisory, a high surf advisory
moving into place. that's coming up. new this morning, firefighters still on the scene of a fire this morning. ktvu's alex savage on the scene. >> reporter: good morning. we are learning this is a home less encampment on fire. it's near the park. if you have been out near this area, it's nearby great highway and balboa street. you can see the firefighters peg out the hot spot ins the area. there was a fair amount of trees in the area where the encampment is. as we pan to the left, about three homes were threatened. we will show you where the firefighters are putting out the fire. the fire broke out on a piece of private property and this
has been a long time problem, this home less encampment. there have been apparently three fire ins the past nine months. >> there's been a problem with the home less people getting in the area. fire started this morning, went undetectived for a while until seen by the garbage company. the fire get into the juniper trees which take off easily. >> reporter: the flames looked pretty large when the fire firefighters got on the scene, but thankfully, they got it under control and they are making sure the fire is out in the area. steep terrain in the area. the fire is in a home less area
that was threatening homes. a big crash is blocking all traffic in the richmond area this morning. the crash is at the central off ramp off i-80. the driver of the big rig swerved to avoid a car and crashed into a guardrail. fuel and oil spilled all over and several vehicles were damage inside the area. or night, a woman was taken to the hospital after a duiment accident. the injured was a passenger in the car. a cal tran employee saw the
event and called for help. >> one of the supervisors saw the accident. it is inauguration weekend and the president is started it off with a day of service. the president and his family are volunteering today. vice president and his wife are doing the same. the president started this as start of his first inauguration. one of the local events is a blanket drive for the homeless. you can drop off blankets from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. later today, the 14th annual
martin luther king stop the violence event will be held. president obama will be sworn in in adrift event tomorrow. the constitution requires the event to happen on the 20th, but since that starts on a sunday, an event will happen on monday so the americans can watch the ceremony. dc police swore in extra police yesterday. some will provide security for the event and others at the ball. devante brown was invited to attend the events. he is a member of the national honor society and several other clubs. he tutors other students and soon, he will see the president
take the oath of office. >> when i heard it would be on martin luther king jr. day, i thought that would be perfect and he is using king's bible. i thought that was really cool. only a few republicans will attend president obama's inauguration. former republican vice presidential candidate has a part in the ceremony. here's a look at the schedule of the events. vice president joe biden will be sworn in at 5:30 our time in washington dc and president obama will be sworn in at 8:30
on sunday morning. the public swearing in until at 8:30 and then followed by the ceremony and the ball. we will have live reports beginning here tomorrow morning on mornings on 2. as the 49ers continue to prepare for the big game tomorrow, one of the stars is accused of assaulting a woman last sunday morning. the police say the incident happened last week just hours after beating the packers. i can't go into details on the investigation, it is still active and ongoing. what i can tell you is that we did interview mr. crabtree.
he was co-optive. >> the fans say they are stunned and want more information before reaching a conclusion. >> shocked. hopefully, they will take the win and go from there. >> no matter what, the team will do a great job on sunday. >> 49er's players and coaches arrived tomorrow. crabtree is with the team and is expected to play. >> this statement was released. the 49ers are taking this matter seriously. we will have no further comment as this is con going. well, despite the situation with crabtree, the 49ers are continuing to prepare for tomorrow's game. coming up, we will have more information on the team and the

afternoon. if you are planning on heading to the beach, it's going to be nice, but be aware of the high surf. be aware. never turn your back on the water, it can be very dangerous. this is the story at this hour, just how cold it is. 29 in concord, the numbers, again, below freezing. a little bit cool for some of us. 29 in the bay. upper 30s to low 40s. san francisco, 40 degrees for you. into hillsburg, 32 for you. a little bit of patchy fog over the north bay valley including maybe a little bit of frost as well. icy roads not out of the question. 31 degrees in walnut creek. now that the sun is up, our temperatures will beginning to rebound. we have mostly sunny skies out there and if i back it up a little bit more, you can see
how the cloud cover is pushed to the north. no rain in the forecast at least for the weekend and the first half of the wieck. we are looking -- week, we are looking at dry conditions as well. the temperatures above average and nearing 70 degrees in some areas. mid 60s for san jose. slightly warmer for tomorrow. monday, perhaps you have the three day weekend, going to be just as nice. as we get into wednesday, we are looking at the first possibility in a while of maybe some of that wet stuff. more coming up in just a bit, and i'll have an hour by hour detailed forecast coming up in just a bit. coming up, we'll have more on the hostage crisis. >> don't de fend me anymore.

mark udof is stepping down from the system in august. he has health issues. he has held the post for many years and is planning to return to teach law. no word on his replacement: more freshmen are applying to college. according to the uc campuses, an increase of 10.7%. also, latino applicants are the largest group of freshmen applicants. at uc berkley, more than 67,000
students apply. ucla received the most applications with more than 80,000 applications. boeing is saying they will not build more dream liners until the investigation is complete. all of the dream liners were grounded until the investigation is complete. >> when they are released slowly, the batteries have a very good safety record, but if not, the batteries will release their content and have the potential for explosion. >> united is the only us airline currently flying the plane and is expressing support
for boeing. now, one of the run ways at the san francisco national airport is closed today for construction. sfo will only be able to handle about half of the 60 flights an hour. the biggest impact will be on passengers flying within a two hour radious of the area. there is good news for the passengers concerned about privacy. body scanners showing a nude impage will no longer be used. sfo stopped using the full body scanners about two years ago. tsa is saying that full body scanners should be removed by june from oakland. a skier buried by an
helmet camera from the rescue team. chilly morning, but as we toss it over to rosmarie we'll check the weather. the weather is feeling a little bit chilly and we are going to continue for the weekend. we are looking at temperatures cool this morning. look at the whites. most of the white in the central value lie but you can see a -- valley, but you can see a few of us in the valley locations sinking in the 20s. the shades of purple shows the 40s. a few shades of pink remaining and along the coastline already warming in the 50s. by noontime, we are feeling pretty good. here's a look at what you can expect for today.

a day to give back, the national event that has people all over the bay area volunteering in their communities. happening now, the president is kick off his weekend with volunteer work. president obama started the event four years ago to honor dr. martin luther king jr. there are events in washington and in the bay area. we'll have more coming up in about half an hour. as part of the national day of service, there is a blanket drive for the homeless. you can drop off the blankets from 9:00 this morning until 6:00 tonight. in his weekly address, president obama called on
congress to pass legislation to stop shootings like the one in connecticut. >> ask your member of congress if they support the ban, and if the answer is no, ask them why not? >> this week, the president asked congress to begin the background checks on the weapons. supporters and opponents of the plan are gearing up for a fight in congress. dozens of groups say they are planning on rallying. more than 100 people turned out for a meeting in connecticut to decide the fate of the school.
many of the parents say they believe classes should not be held at the school. the officials say all option are on the table including tearing the school down and build a memorial. >> my children went there and we have memories, but i have friends who lost children. i don't feel i am one to be making the decision. a new york area newspaper at the center of the gun debate has taken down information. the website listed names involved the editors say it relayed a powerful message. a man is in critical condition this morning after being shot in east oakland. the police say the shooting
happened last night on congress street. the police have not released information about a gunman. a richmond man is saying his death penalty is use less say. a jury convicted buress in november. he says he committed the murders because he thought they were romantically involved and feels no remorse yesterday in san jose, supreme courters of the murder suspect taughted the others.
reportedly, he thought soranto was burglar rising cars. >> he killed a man, the father of five children and took him away from me. how can they say he is a hero? >> everybody in our city feels they are not secure. that's why it speaks to them directly. it could be their son on either side. >> an online petition has more than 500 signatures. hernandez is expected back in court on the 15th. a pedestrian was struck at 5:45 last night at the intersection of 7th and howard. officers have not said whether the woman was in the crosswalk. >> people drive crazy here. i walk home. i walk to and from work and i
have to tell you probably at every corner a car cuts in front of me at the crosswalk. a 3-year-old boy hit by a vehicle in oakland is expected to survive. a woman dropped her cell phone and bent down to pick it up when the accident happened. both the driver and the boy are from oakland. their names have not been released. there could be an overflow of crowd at the hearing this week. protesters accused the former police chief of condoning excessive force and racial profiling. right now, the balcony inside the counsel meeting is expected
to stay open. oakland will de vise a plan to combat problems in the city. the major says the number of complaints fell while he was in office. chris moore received a send off last night at a retirement party. he is retiring after 27 years in the department andless than two years after becoming chief. he said his fate was sealed when the city counsel stopped the increase of taxes. >> today, mavericks will begin get southing -- setting up the

of his first inauguration. here at home, volunteers are helping out for the national day of service and one of the biggest projects is in daily city. alex has more. >> reporter: in just a little while from now, volunteers will be putting the finishing touches on the condominium complex here on mission road. they are working on the 36 unit complex right now to get this ready. this is going to be an affordable housing complex for people to move into later on this year. apparently, this is one of the largest habitat for humanity projects. >> it's true. this is one of the biggest in the u.s. we are taking the bay
area spirit and work on this project for 36 families. typically, we build houses for single families. this is different. 90% of the labor is done with volunteers and it's remarkable we are able to accomplish that. >> and on this national day of service, you have all of the volunteer spots filled. >> we do, but we will need roughly 50 volunteers a day on the other projects. >> reporter: for someone who has never volunteered for a project like this, what does it do for you? >> it's a remarkable opportunity to swing a hammer and do some construction. when you walk away, you leave behind something that is

we have more from the local volunteer event here. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, the volunteers are working on finishing up this 36 unit condominium complex. we want to show you was happening right now. we are a little ways away from the start of the work here. the volunteers are going to start their orientation soon. they are going to be getting their tools and finding out what the need is today. this is a 36 unit in daily city, and we just got a tour of the place. today, 100 volunteers will be picking up hammers and paint brushes. they will be, among over
things, painting doors and doing landscaping. that are more volunteers than normal because this is part of the national day of service. the people moving in to this area will be paying around $200,000 with zero interest loans. this is the largest project in the world. >> each of the communities are given the opportunity. for us with land at a premium here in the bay area, we have to go vertical so building 36 units is the best option for us. >> reporter: so people will be working here until about 4:30 this afternoon. they have a lot more volunteers than they normally see out
here. they will continue to do work on the project almost every single day. the key is they don't need more volunteers today. they are set on volunteers, but they do say throughout the rest of the week, they certainly can use more rep on the project to get it rapped up and completed by april. they are hoping people can move in at that time. >> and to find volunteers in the area, go to our website at ktvu.com. overnight, one woman was taken to the hospital after a roll over accident. the woman was a passenger in a car that rolled over this morning in oakland near broadway. a caltran employee saw the accident and called for help. the driver was taken into
custody for suspicion of dui. police say a pursuit began around midnight when a driver ran a red light at 3rd and e streets. the pursuit stopped nearby when a driver ran up an embankment and was found hide inning the bushes. the driver facing several charges. and investigation is now underway after two drivers struck and killed a pedestrian in am market neighborhood. the police say the accident happened around 5:45 last night at the intersection of 7th and howard. a man who lives ins the area says the area is dangerous. >> people drive crazy here. i walk to and from work and i have to tell you probably at every corner a car cuts in front of me while i'm in the

about 100 volunteers will be working here today. you can see they have the national day of service signs up here, but you can see a group of volunteers and they are going through their orientation. they have been issued their hell helments and are getting their assignments. a lot of work to do here. the workers started on this project back in 2010. this complex will provide affordable housing for residents in the area. >> i wantedded to give back to the community and we are here with a church group from st. domonick. we are looking for a way to
contribute. >> reporter: now, they already have a large group here, so no more volunteers are needed at this particular site today, but habitat for humanity could use your help on other days. they are hoping to have this ready by april. they will be working throughout the day until about 4:40 this afternoon. coming up later this hour, hear from one volunteer who has been working on this project from the beginning. alex savidge reporting. later today, a community

if you can believe that. you can see these volunteers pitching in. these volunteers signed in about a half an hour. they will be doing a lot of the finishing touches like painting and doors and landscaping. this will provide affordable housing for many in the bay area. habitat for humanity started this project in 2010. >> i am just like excited to see it done and i am so happy that these people are going to get the places they are going to get and i am thankful for all of the people work on this site. >> reporter: so, at this point, they have 1200 volunteers -- 100 volunteers on the site, and that's really all of the volunteers they need today.
